Gold medallist honoured with Huntly street naming

A street within a new housing development in Huntly is to be named after a Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Marr Area Committee agreed on Tuesday (Dec 17) to name the new road ‘Sheena Sharp Drive’ after the talented markswoman.

Sheena represented Scotland in two Commonwealth Games, winning the Prone Pairs Silver in 2002 followed by Prone Pairs Gold and Individual Gold in 2006.

Born in Torphins in 1953 before relocating to Huntly, Sheena was invested in the Scottish Smallbore Rifle Association Hall of Fame in 2007.

Huntly Community Council suggested the name as an alternative to other proposals as it felt Sheena should be honored in her hometown.

Following discussion with the council’s Marr Area Manager, Janelle Clark, Sheena was honoured to have her name put forward.

Marr Area Committee chair Moira Ingleby said afterwards: “We were delighted to approve the recommendations from Huntly Community Council and name this new street after Sheena Sharp.

“It’s a tremendous way for us to recognise and celebrate local home-grown talent who continue to be an inspiration to us all.”
