Portlethen Academy pupils 'Gear Up 2 Go' again

An Aberdeen-based company which specialises in torque machines has enhanced its links to education through a project which aims to give young people an insight into the world of work.

Staff at Enerquip have continued their long-term support of Portlethen Academy’s “Gear Up 2 Go” project and recently welcomed a group of young people to their Altens headquarters for a talk and tour by director Andrew Robins.

“Gear Up 2 Go” is designed to support young people in making the transition from the classroom to the workplace, training or further education. It is delivered by Community Learning & Development's “Work with Young People” team at Portlethen Academy.  Now in its tenth year, the project offers young people the chance to acquire skills and knowledge that will assist them in preparing for the next phase of their work, training or education journey.

Commenting on the company’s ongoing support for project Andrew Robins of Enerquip said: “Our link to this important project predates Enerquip itself and we have continued with it because we believe it is crucial to invest in the workforce of the future.

“By sharing information and inviting people to come and see what we do, young people will be better equipped to make informed decisions about their future.  We hope that their insight into the opportunities available will help encourage them into our industry.”

Portlethen Academy Head Teacher Neil Morrison explained: “The expertise, knowledge and funding provided by Enerquip are pivotal to the Gear Up 2 Go project. This provides our young people with a practical experience in industry which is vital to them as they make decisions on their future and the next stage in their personal development. We are, as ever, extremely grateful to Enerquip for their continued support in broadening the horizons of all Gear Up 2 Go participants.”

Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee, Cllr Gillian Owen added: “It’s great to see another example of strong partnership working between our schools and local businesses. We are very proud to be committed to developing the young workforce and equipping all of our young people with the skills for learning, life and work.”
