Raising awareness of breast feeding

Date Published: 31 July 2020

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and galvanise action on themes related to breastfeeding.

Taking place every August during the first seven days of the month, World Breastfeeding Week aims to highlight the benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health and welfare of babies, as well as benefits for maternal health. In addition, the week also highlights the good nutrition provided through breast feeding, poverty reduction and food security. This year’s theme is “support breastfeeding for a healthier planet.”

The week is organised annually by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network that aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding around the world.  WABA works with the World Health Organization and UNICEF to ensure aid is distributed to the right people in the right communities.

The WBW 2020 campaign focuses on the impact of infant feeding on the environment/climate change and the importance of protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding for the health of the planet and its people.

WBW also aims to raise awareness of the health and wellbeing outcomes of breastfeeding and the importance of supporting mothers to breastfeed for as long as they wish. Further information about support availably locally within Grampian is available on the NHS Grampian website
