Altered or Repaired Property Exemption or Discount

 

When a property is unoccupied and is undergoing major repair work to render it habitable and/or is undergoing (or has undergone) structural alteration it may be exempt from Council Tax for a period of up to 12 months from the last date of occupation, provided that the last period of occupation lasted for at least 3 months.

 

Exemption can only be awarded from the date the repairs and/or structural alterations commenced.

 

Also, where following a sale of a property, it is unoccupied and is undergoing or requires major work to render it habitable a 50% discount for a period of up to 6 months may be applicable.

Disabled Banding Reduction

Council Tax allows for a reduction where a property contains facilities to meet the need(s) of a disabled person. 

The Criteria are:

Disabled Person: He or she must live in the property for which the reduction is requested and be substantially and permanently disabled (By illness, congenitial deformity or otherwise). The disabled person can be under 18.

Property: This must be the disabled persons sole or main residence and must contain one of the following special features (These features must be essential or of major importance to the wellbeing of the disabled person)-

  • A room which is not a bathroom, kitchen or lavatory and which is used for providing therapy or other such needs of the disabled person.
  • A bathroom or kitchen which is not the only bathroom or kitchen within the property which is required to meet the needs of the disabled person.
  • The provision of sufficient floor space to permit the disabled person the use of a wheelchair space within the property. A wheelchair must be actively used within the property by the disabled person.

Any application for Disabled Banding Reduction must be made by the person who is liable to pay the Council Tax for the property.

Severely Mentally Impaired

Regulations state that a person is severely mentally impaired if they have a severe impairment of intelligence and social functioning (however caused) which appears to be permanent. We may be required to send you a form which requires to be completed by your doctor.

Carer

The Carer must satisfy the following conditions. He or She:-

  • Must reside in the home where they are providing care
  • Must not be the spouse of the cared for person, or the parent where the cared for person is under 18
  • Must provide care for more than 35 hours a week and the cared for person must be in receipt of (or have an underlying entitlement to) one of the benefits listed below:
    • Attendance Allowance (Higher Rate)
    • Disability Living Allowance Care Component (Higher Rate)
    • Increase in Constant Attendance Allowance
    • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
