Young people encouraged to make the most of their entitlements

A meeting has been held by Aberdeenshire Council and Young Scot to raise awareness of a national entitlement card for young people.

According to Scottish Law, the Young Scot National Entitlement Card with the PASS hologram is a legal and trusted way for young people to prove their age and gain access to goods and services for which they are entitled. Aberdeenshire Council supports the use of this card through its trading standards team, informing businesses that it is an acceptable form of proof of age.

Cllr Leigh Wilson chaired the meeting and was joined by Year of Young People 2018 #YOYP2018 ambassadors Emil Harvey, Tihana Whyte and Jane Lawson. Lauren McGill, Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament and chair of the Mearns Youth Forum, also attended along with Police Constable Marc Camus and Marie Duguid, Young Scot’s Local Partnership Development Manager.

The meeting took place at St Cyrus Village Inn, St Cyrus on Monday, May 28.

Cllr Wilson said: “The intention of this event was to raise awareness of the Young Scot National Entitlement Card among young people and the wider community such as local businesses and residents who may see young people use the card as a form of proof of age. I hope following the meeting the local community is more aware of the rights of young people.”

Louise Macdonald, Chief Executive of Young Scot, said: “PASS is a quality assured scheme, backed by experts and the Scottish Government and is fully audited. With a real photo, tamper-proof date-of-birth and a PASS hologram, which is protected by law, the Young Scot National Entitlement Card stands equally with a driver’s license or a passport as legitimate proof of age under Scottish law.”

“Not all young people can afford to access a driver’s licence or passport, and they are expensive documents to lose, responsible retailers should be giving a young person every opportunity to prove their age. We are asking all licence holders, shop staff and door staff in Scotland to treat all young people fairly and accept all valid Young Scot Cards by using the new PASS packs.”
