Final call for entries for coastal challenge

A final call is being made for entries to a rugged rural race that takes in some of Scotland’s most picturesque coastline as the event is now fast approaching.

The Broch, Rosehearty, Gamrie (BRG) Coastal Challenge is one of the toughest yet most scenic courses in north east Scotland. The event starts in Fraserburgh and finishes at Bracoden School, Gamrie. Participants can choose to walk, run or cycle the 17.5 mile challenge.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, August 25, less than two weeks for those weighing up whether to take part.

Cllr Anne Stirling, Aberdeenshire Council’s Communities Committee chair, said: “I would urge anyone who is undecided about whether or not to take part in this fantastic challenge to grasp the nettle and go for it. Participants will get a wonderful sense of personal achievement completing this challenge and it could encourage some people to surprise themselves by taking up more regular exercise.

“Aberdeenshire Council has recently launched a ten year sport and physical activity strategy and events such as play an important part in the council delivering this plan. I hope the local community comes out in droves to support this excellent event. I would like to wish all those taking part the very best of luck.”

Committee vice chair, Cllr Iris Walker, said: “Time is ticking for those wishing to compete in such a worthwhile event. I would wholeheartedly encourage as many people as possible to sign up. If you are unsure you can do it by yourself bring a buddy and make it a social occasion – you can walk, run or cycle. I am aware that a number of local charitable organisations such as the Move More group are involved in fundraising for the challenge. I would like to thank them for their support. Best wishes for all those who take part this time round.”

So far there are over 315 entries but there is still time to swell those numbers. Registration takes place from 6pm to 7pm on Friday, August 24, at Fraserburgh Community and Sports Centre for those who have already entered who want to collect their race number early.

The event takes place on Saturday, August 25. Last minute entries are being taken on Saturday morning – with registration at the Beach Café also in Fraserburgh from 9am.
