Scotland call up for Peterhead's Zane

Zane Laird, an S4 pupil at Peterhead Academy, has been selected for the U16s Scotland football squad. Zane, who currently plays for both Peterhead Boys Club 2004s and Fraserburgh Development as a striker, is delighted with the opportunity to represent his country.

He commented: “This year I was so happy when I was chosen to play for the league select team as we were told the Scotland Select Coach was going to be there. In that game we beat Dundee Select 5-1; I scored 4 of the goals. I was asked by the Scottish Select Coach to go to Scottish trials in Glasgow and was ecstatic when I received an email saying I was successful.”

Zane started playing football when he was in Primary 2, supported by his dad who was a team coach at Buchanhaven. In Primary 5 he went to a 10-week trial with Aberdeen FC but didn’t make it into the team. As he says, this made him even more determined to succeed.

He explained: “I really wanted to improve so I signed for Dyce and played with them for five years before returning to Peterhead Boys Club. I am so excited to now have the opportunity to represent Scotland in a three-day tournament in Largs (Celtic Cup).”
