Inspection praises effective relationships at St Andrews Primary School and Nursery

Effective working relationships and information sharing were just some of the positive areas acknowledged by inspectors after they visited St Andrews Primary School and Nursery in Fraserburgh.

The Care Inspectorate rated St Andrews Primary School and Nursery as “Good” in quality of care and support and quality of environment following the assessment in June.

The report said: “Effective working relationships and information sharing was established with parents and other agencies to support children’s care. Clear individual plans were in place for children who needed additional support with their learning, one to one support was provided where needed and managed well overall.

“Children aged two were benefitting from an early start in nursery. Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) was well understood by staff and children’s health and wellbeing promoted. As a result, children were nurtured, confident and happy.”

Laurence Findlay, Aberdeenshire Council’s Director of Education and Children’s Services, said: “I would like to congratulate head teacher Roselynn Birnie and her staff for this great inspection. I have read with interest many of the positive comments left by parents in a questionnaire included in the inspection report. It is hugely heartening to hear that children are developing confidence and independence since starting at the nursery; staff being described as a very pleasant and attentive and that children look forward to going to nursery. I am really pleased to see that national policies are clearly understood by staff and implemented well which has led to encouraging results.”

Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Education Vincent Docherty said: “I am delighted that the hard work by staff at St Andrew’s Primary School and Nursery has been reflected in this positive inspection. It is particularly pleasing that the staff’s imaginative approach to play has been acknowledged by inspectors. It is also encouraging that staff embracing outdoor play has also been highlighted. It is encouraging that both the nursery and the service have put in place a number of actions to address the recommendations in the inspection about making lunchtime more fun and ensuring children have healthy and balanced meals.”

St Andrews Primary School and Nursery was rated as “Good” for quality of care and support and quality of management and leadership in a previous inspection in November 2016.
