A wee sleep out to highlight a big problem

Children and staff at Logie Durno Primary School are taking part in a sleep out to raise awareness of homelessness.

The ‘Wee Sleep Out’ will take place on Thursday, December 5, the day before the international awareness day the World’s Big Sleep Out.

A selection of the school’s pupils will hunker down to sleep in the school in order to learn about homelessness and raise awareness of the issue. The children will all have tea and participate in activities organised by the school’s staff before everyone turns in for the night.  The next day breakfast will be provided before fun hands-on learning prevents any sleepy heads in the classroom.

Logie Durno’s Head Teacher Elizabeth McMahon explained: “We want our children to become global citizens with great social values and think this ties in perfectly with the school’s ethos of helping others. This is especially true at Christmas time.

“We believe that experimental learning is very important. We will be safe and cosy in our school building – but this experience helps the children to understand that although having shelter is a basic right, not everyone has this opportunity.”

Aberdeenshire Council’s Director of Education and Children’s Services, Laurence Findlay, said: “It is fantastic to see that children and staff at Logie Durno School are proactively working together to raise awareness of such a vital issue. I wish them all the best in raising as much money as possible.”
