Improved recycling rate tops council’s Christmas wishlist

Save money and the environment this Christmas by planning your food shop carefully and disposing of food and other recyclable waste responsibly.

Aberdeenshire residents can avoid sending waste to landfill needlessly by using recycling services already available to them.

With the festive period looming and many families buying large amounts of food, wrapping paper, cards, as well as their Christmas tree, there is a danger significantly more materials will go to waste than necessary.

This year, Aberdeenshire Council is encouraging residents to reuse leftover turkeys and veggies by cooking them at home or recycling them in food caddies, collected from homes every week.

Wrapping paper, cardboard, non-glittery Christmas cards, and many other items can all be put in residents’ blue-lidded kerbside bins which are picked up fortnightly. If residents fill their recycling bin to capacity, they can request an additional container free of charge or take excess waste and recycling to their nearest recycling.

Real Christmas trees and large items of cardboard packaging can be taken to recycling centres.

Festive recycling tips will be published on social media to help householders ensure they make the most their Christmas materials this year.

Owing the public holidays over the festive period, some residents will have their bins collected on different days. Those affected will receive a postcard with information on their collections as follows.

Collections due on Monday, December 25 will take place the following Friday (December 29). Those due on Tuesday, December 26 will be done the following Saturday (December 30).

Collections scheduled for Monday, January 1 will be done on Friday, January 5 and those due on Tuesday, January 2 will take place on Saturday, January 6.
If for any reason the council is unable to collect bins on any of these days, additional bags of waste or boxes of recycling left beside the bin will also be lifted on the date of your next scheduled collection for that material.

The council’s network of recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and Tuesday, January 2. Sites which are open on Sundays will close at 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. For more information, see: http://bit.ly/AbshireHWRCs
