Sign up for coastal challenge

Entries are now open for a rugged rural race that takes in some of Scotland’s most picturesque coastline.

The Broch, Rosehearty, Gamrie (BRG) Coastal Challenge is one of the toughest yet most scenic courses in north east Scotland. The course starts in Fraserburgh and finishes in Gardenstown. Participants can choose to walk, run or cycle the 17.5 mile event.

Cllr Anne Stirling, Aberdeenshire Council Communities Committee chair, said: “The BRG Coastal Challenge was facing an uncertain future as the group who ran the event agreed to step down. No other local group came forward so our events team decided to step in to safeguard this fantastic community sports challenge.

“I am really pleased they have because it fits in with our aim of encouraging more people to take up sport and become active. I hope that the community comes out in droves to sign up for this very worthwhile sporting challenge. Good luck to everyone taking part.”

Committee vice chair, Cllr Iris Walker, said: “It is great that Aberdeenshire Council has stepped in to ensure this sporting challenge is able to continue. I understand that there were 500 participants who completed the challenge last year, so it would have been a big loss to the community had this event folded. Best wishes to all those who decide to sign up this year.”

The BRG Coastal Challenge is set to take place on Saturday, August 25. However, entries are being sought now. Early-bird entries cost £25 and those considering taking part are encouraged to take advantage of this offer as places are in demand. Entries from Friday, June 1 rise by £5 to £30. There is also a small five per cent processing fee.
