Walking netball comes to Turriff

Turriff Sports Centre recently hosted a game of netball with a difference.

Aberdeen Ladies and Turriff Walking Netball Club competed in a walking netball game on Wednesday, May 8.

Walking netball is a relatively new sport, formed in 2017 by Netball Scotland and Age Scotland, following a successful pilot in the Grampian region.

The sport can be played by all ages. It is the same as netball but played at a slower pace with adapted rules and court size.

Cllr Anne Stirling, Aberdeenshire Council’s Communities Committee chair, said: “Live Life Aberdeenshire is committed to encourage healthy living and promote wellbeing. It is therefore pleasing that new sports are being used to meet this aim. I am glad that Aberdeenshire has played a pioneering role in establishing this rapidly growing sport in Scotland.”

Vice chair of the Aberdeenshire Culture and Sport sub-committee, Cllr Anne Simpson said: “I am pleased to hear that the inaugural walking netball game at Turriff Sports Centre was a success. It is encouraging that a group of around 20 participants have been regularly practicing at Turriff Sports Centre, demonstrating that Turriff residents are enjoying this new sport and Live Life Aberdeenshire’s commitment to improve the lifestyle and opportunities of local people.”
