Tribute paid to first Aberdeenshire Council convenor

Tribute has been paid following the death of Aberdeenshire Council’s first convenor, Dr Colin Millar OBE.

The former access officer for Gordon District Council went on to become Aberdeenshire Council’s first convenor when the authority was formed in 1996, having been elected as councillor for the Insch ward a year earlier.

During his service with the council, Dr Millar became chair of the Garioch Area Committee in 1999 and was awarded an OBE for services to local government in 2001.

Outside of the council, he provided support for the Bailies of Bennachie for many years and held a passion for the environment. He also undertook charity work.

“Colin was a well-respected councillor who was known for his upbeat attitude and quirky sense of humour,” said Provost of Aberdeenshire Bill Howatson.

“As convenor of what was then a brand new council, Colin played an important role at a time of great change for Aberdeenshire and will be remembered for that.

“And he was well-known as a champion for green issues which was reflected in his support for the Bailies. Colin will be very much missed by his former colleagues and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
