Innovative approaches to improvement commended by inspectors

Inspectors have praised the progress being made at Inverurie Academy when they visited the school to follow up on an inspection that occurred in June 2018.

Education Scotland said it was impressed with the systems the school has introduced to support staff and track pupils’ progress.

The report said: “The headteacher and senior leadership team provide strong leadership and a clear direction for school improvement. Staff, young people, parents and partners express a high level of confidence in them. The systems they have established are supporting staff to work together to bring about improvement.”

During the visit, inspectors learnt about the school’s broad general education which helps teachers track young people’s progress in learning and assists with raising attainment.

Cllr Gillian Owen, Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee chair, said: “These are really exciting times for Inverurie Academy. The school is due to move into a fantastic state-of-the-art community campus soon.

"Therefore, it is fantastic to see the innovative approaches the head teacher Mark Jones and his senior leadership team are taking to raise attainment, make informed decisions about the progress of pupils’ learning which in turn allows pupils, teachers and parents to make well thought out and sound decisions about subject choice.

"I am delighted that inspectors acknowledge the improvement in aspects of attainment since the last inspection.”

Committee vice-chair Cllr Rosemary Bruce said: “It is really encouraging to read about the progress Inverurie Academy is making since the last inspection and that the inspectors have acknowledged it.

"Whilst there are still steps the school needs to take along its journey towards improvement, everyone connected with the school can be very proud of the achievements highlighted in the report.

"Examples such as the mentoring by S6 pupils to those in S1 demonstrates a nurturing, supportive and welcoming environment.”

Inverurie Academy continues to work on the improvements identified in the original inspection in June 2018. Inspectors will visit Inverurie Academy again within a year.
