End of term thank you

As local communities look forward to the end of term this Friday (3 July) Aberdeenshire Council’s leaders are keen to say a very big thank you and well done to thousands of young people, parents and staff.

Director of Education and Children’s Services, Laurence Findlay said: “We are hugely grateful to everyone out there who continues to give of their best to support children and young people through an incredibly difficult time. This includes parents, carers, teachers, school support staff, social workers and our multi-agency partners: you really are fabulous and we appreciate your efforts.”

Chair of the Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee, Cllr Gillian Owen added: “To all of our young people across Aberdeenshire – well done. The last few months haven’t been easy for anyone but you have shown remarkable resilience and I’ve seen loads of examples of fantastic work you’ve done in lockdown. If you are in need of support or assistance, please reach out, keep being your wonderful selves and keep learning.”

The local authority has launched a special website for children and young people to Shine a Light on Lockdown and keep a record of their memories and experiences: https://sites.google.com/as.glow.scot/shinealighton-lockdown/home

Submissions will continue to be accepted during the summer break and into the new school year, also documenting what young people are looking forward to and informing decision-making by highlighting the things that matter to young people most. Email pupilparticipation@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Vice Chair Cllr Rosemary Bruce summed up by saying: “We hope you all have an opportunity to take a well-earned break during the summer holidays. As we strive to use lessons learned during lockdown to inform future thinking, the new Shine a Light on Lockdown website is a great way for us all to share and reflect so please pop your submissions in.

“I would also like to underline the importance of us all continuing to look out for each other while schools are closed. If you have concerns, please do get in touch. We will look forward to seeing you back in school in August.”

The Council’s Children and Families Teams will continue to be available during the summer holidays. If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk or is being abused, phone 01467 537111 during weekdays or 03456 08 12 06 for out of hours support. In an emergency, please phone 999 for police assistance.

As previously outlined, Aberdeenshire Council is now hoping to welcome all children and young people across the local area back to school from August 12. A series of FAQs have been published on the Council’s website for parents and these will be updated as new guidance is provided by the Scottish Government: https://bit.ly/FAQschools

We asked schools for one lockdown learning and teaching highlight, in order to provide examples of innovative approaches schools have taken. Here are just some of those examples:
