Let's support young carers across our communities

Young Carers Action Day 2022 takes place on Wednesday 16 March and the theme this year is 'Taking Action on Isolation'.

Young Carers Action Day (YCAD) is a nationwide annual event organised by the Carers Trust, with the aim of raising public awareness of young carers, the pressures and challenges they face, and the contribution they make by caring for their family or friends. It is also a day to call for more action to support young carers and give them the extra help they may need to live full and healthy lives.

Young carers chose the theme for this year's event saying the focus should be on tackling the isolation they face as carers. Young carers have highlighted how having the right support, such as regular short breaks from caring, can be really beneficial. This kind of support gives them a better chance of succeeding in all parts of their lives.

To get support in Aberdeenshire, email aberdeenshirecarers@quarriers.org.uk You can also sign up for the Young Scot Young Carers Package by visiting: https://young.scot/get-informed/national/young-carers-package

Quarriers is commissioned to deliver one-to-one support for young people with caring roles across Aberdeenshire. Their website explains a young carer is someone aged under 18 years who helps to look after or support a member of their family who has a disability, illness, drug, alcohol or mental health problem. We understand caring takes many forms and could include helping younger brothers and sisters or doing the cleaning.

Aberdeenshire schools have been encouraged to join in on YCAD and resources can be found on the Young Carers Action Day 2022 Resources webpage.

Staff from Quarriers Aberdeenshire Carer Support Service will be visiting some of the Aberdeenshire Schools who signed up to the Aberdeenshire Schools Young Carers Charter For Action. If your school would like to sign up to the Charter, email carersupport@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Further information on the Charter and support for Aberdeenshire young carers can be found on Aberdeenshire Council Support For Young Carers and Aberdeenshire GIRFEC - Young Carers webpages. The Carers Trust Scotland Digital Education Hub now has Resources for Aberdeenshire Young Carers to help and support young carers in schools, such as posters, leaflets and the young carer referral form for Quarriers.

For young carers who are or soon to be 18 and making the transition into adulthood, there is also a Young Scot Transitions Pack available. Support is also on hand for adult carers from Quarriers and more information is available at: Support for carers - Aberdeenshire Council
