Upcoming public consultation on Portsoy road safety

Aberdeenshire Council will lead a public consultation in Portsoy Town Hall next month to listen to the views of the local community on safety proposals for Seafield Street.

A fatal road accident in December 2014 prompted a full review of pedestrian safety on the street and the council is now considering if the introduction of a zebra crossing would be appropriate.

At the consultation on Tuesday, December 1 road officers will seek the public’s view on the proposed location for the crossing, which is between Burnside Street and Shillinghill.

This site provides a central location on the street as well as maximum visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.

The drop-in consultation session will take place between 9.30am and 7pm. Residents and local businesses will be able to study the location plan along with the associated waiting restrictions and amendments to bus stop locations.

Following the consultation, road officers will review the comments and make recommendations to the Banff & Buchan Area Committee for further consideration.

Should the committee wish to proceed with the proposal, further consultations will take place early next year in accordance with legislative procedure.

Councillor John Cox, chairperson of the Banff and Buchan Area Committee, said: “Road safety is of paramount importance across Banff and Buchan, and I am very pleased that these proposals for Seafield Street are being progressed.

“I hope as many residents as possible respond to the call for feedback, and help us make Portsoy safer.”

Margaret-Jane Cardno, Banff and Buchan Area Manager, said: “I urge the Portsoy community to attend the pubic consultation. It will be an invaluable opportunity to have your say and ask questions.

“A questionnaire will be available for the public to note their comments on the proposed location, or indicate a possible alternative location.”

The council previously carried out a public consultation on the proposed installation of road safety measures on Seafield Street in 1999/2000. The result of this detailed consultation was the introduction of footway build-outs to assist pedestrians crossing the road.
