Could you adopt a child?

Are you considering adopting a child? There are a lot of events taking place across Aberdeenshire specifically for people thinking about welcoming a new young person into their family.

National Adoption Week is taking place across Scotland from this week (Mon 20 - Fri 24 Nov). In Aberdeenshire there are drop in sessions at Carlton House, Arduthie Road, Stonehaven on Wednesday, 22 November; the council’s social work office in Inverurie High Street on Thursday, 23 November, and at Buchan House in Peterhead on Friday, 24 November.

The Stonehaven and Inverurie sessions take place from 9am to 5pm whilst the Peterhead one runs from 10am to 4pm. An adoption worker will be available to speak to anyone interested in adoption; they will also have leaflets and Registration of Interest Forms.

Cllr Gillian Owen, Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee chair, said: “Adopting a child can be a truly rewarding experience for both the parents and the child concerned. Whilst it isn’t a decision to be taken lightly, it is hugely satisfying to give a youngster a warm and stable environment in which to grow up and develop.

“If you are giving serious consideration to adopting a child or you are curious, then why not pop in to one of the drop in sessions? Our social work team are a friendly bunch who are only too happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about the adoption process. The sessions will be relaxed and informal, giving you the chance to explore all issues around adoption.”

Vice Committee chair, Cllr Mark Findlater, said: “I would like to thank the often selfless and remarkable people who have given their time to adopt bairns across Aberdeenshire. Being an adopter is not always easy but the rewards outweigh the challenges. There are plenty of myths associated with adoption – for example, that you have to have a partner or be in a relationship; plenty of single people make great adopters. So if you think adoption is for you, come along to a drop in session near you.”
