National rugby call up for Peterhead teacher

Peterhead Academy principal teacher of numeracy Mairi Forsyth is taking great strides in her sport as well as her day job. Mairi, who plays for Stirling County Rugby Club in addition to her teaching role was recently called up as a substitute for the Scotland’s Women’s squad against Canada.

As a physics and maths teacher, getting out on the rugby field couldn’t be further away from the day-to-day but Mairi finds her strong work ethic has been key to her success both on and off the pitch. She’s keen to inspire the young people she works with to follow their passions, keep fit and aim high.

Mairi said: “I am hugely honoured and grateful to have been called up to receive my first cap for Scotland Women. I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from both pupils and staff at Peterhead Academy, it has been incredible and I can’t thank everyone enough.”

Councillor Gillian Owen, Chair of the Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee added: “It’s wonderful to have people like Mairi working with our young people across Aberdeenshire. A big part of raising attainment is about showing goals are achievable, your dreams are worth working hard for and you can excel in more than one area. It’s about developing a growth mindset and realising if you’re not quite achieving what you’d like to yet, you can get there eventually.

“Well done to Mairi and good luck with rugby as well as teaching!”
