Trees planted to commemorate Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee

Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Douglas Fowlie joined teachers and pupils of Clerkhill School and volunteers from the Brave Outdoors Community Woodland to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by planting a selection of trees.

The Green Canopy tree planting ceremony is part of a series of events across Aberdeenshire and beyond marking this most remarkable milestone of The Queen’s reign, which began in 1952.

The trees planted during the ceremony were secured from the Woodland Trust in a joint venture between Clerkhill School and the Brave Outdoors Community Woodland. Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Douglas Fowlie was joined by Clerkhill School Head Teacher Ann-Louise Murray, and a selection of pupils, teachers, and volunteers from the Brave Outdoors Community Woodland during the tree planting ceremony on Wednesday, March 23. The ceremony took place at Brave Outdoors Community Woodland near Peterhead.

Brave Outdoors Community Woodland was chosen because Clerkhill School has been visiting the site regularly with a John Muir Award group. Ten primary six pupils have been developing perseverance, resilience, and team building skills through different activities such as: den building, identifying trees, campfire cooking and helping to create footpaths in the woodland. As part of the award the pupils must discover, explore, conserve and share their experiences of a wild place. The John Muir Award pupils will help to plant some of the trees as part of the 'conserve' element of their award.

Mrs Murray said: “It was a privilege to welcome the Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Douglas Fowlie to Brave Outdoors Community Woodland. The children were really excited about this very special ceremony.

“I am grateful too for the trees supplied by the Woodland Trust. The trees will not only act as a symbol of Her Majesty The Queen’s enduring reign, as well as an excellent example of partnership work between our school the Woodland Trust and the Brave Outdoors Community Woodland but they will also be a valuable resource for outdoor learning and help the environment.”

There are several Green Canopy tree planting ceremonies taking place at schools across Aberdeenshire to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The focal point of the national celebrations will be over the Platinum Jubilee weekend with an extended Bank Holiday from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5.
