There is a long ecclesiastical use of the site, with the earliest recorded church on the site was granted to Arbroath on its foundation by William the Lion in 1178, and was dedicated in 1242. The graveyard walls are 17th century. The current church was built in 1870-2 by Andrew Heiton Jr, architect, replacing an earlier church built in 1767 that was destroyed by fire in 1867. The graveyard walls are 17th century. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as a cruciform-plan church within an oblong graveyard. The 2nd edition OS map shows the current church built in 1870-2, which is an irregular rectangular building. It is a Gothic-style church constructed from rusticated rubble with a slate roof, and features an 85 feet (26 metre) high bell tower on the south-east corner. The graveyard includes monuments from the 17th century.
