Farmstead, in use, thought to have been built on the site of a castle. Newton Castle destroyed by the Earl of Argyll in 1641. It was reduced to the foundations in the 1840s, the last vestige probably being a portion of wall, circa 1.52 m (5') thick, which used to stand 'in the old farmhouse', but was removed in 1861. The farmstead is presumably built upon its site, and is depicted from the 1st edition OS map. The 1st edition shows a U-plan steading, open to the southwest, and with an outshot on the west side, probably housing a waterwheel fed by a lade from the north. To the southwest is a house and garden. There had been some additions to both house and steading by the time of the 2nd edition map.
