Site of a possible castle. According to the antiquary Jervise in the mid 19th century, the Castle of Thornton was a small building, which has apparently been erected at different times. The older portion of the building bore two dates '1531' and '1662'. Jervise records a third dated stone, an armorial stone dated '1619'. When visited by the OS in 1958, the alleged site of the castle was pointed out by the occupant of Thornton Cottage, who further stated that an armorial stone was removed from here to Glamis Castle. The foundations of a building were seen, but they looked 'more the walls of an old farmstead rather than a castle'. The ruins were obscured by heavy undergrowth when visited again by the OS in 1969. When visited by J. Sherriff in 1984, no visible remains were at the suggested site. On the 1st edition OS map (circa 1846) an L-shaped range of two buildings is shown at the site.
