Details Burgh and town of Kirriemuir, which was erected a burgh of barony in 1458-9. It formed around the present old parish church (NO35SE0003) originally bounded by the present Reform Street, Schoolwynd, Kirkwynd and Pierhead. By 1516 there were 32 houses occupied by 124 people. The tolbooth (NO35SE0014) was built in 1604. A school in the present Schoolwynd In the early 1700s was ruinous by 1784. A tannery and boot factory were established around 1750. The 1792 First Statistical account refers to annual fairs in July and October for goods including animals, flax and wool. At that time there were 492 houses, 10 brewers (inn-keepers), 228 weavers and 27 merchants. Kirriemuir continued to expand significantly in the 19th century.
