Details Remains of a cairn consisting of a flat-topped mound, placed eccentrically within and surrounded by a bank. Formerly regarded as a defensive earthwork and as such marked as a fort on both the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. Previous interpretations include a Roman signal station, a motte and a bell cairn or barrow. The cairn, 20.4 m to 21.3 m in diameter at its base, 1.5 to 1.8 m high, is covered with heather and blaeberries. A number of large stones protrude from its flanks, and several pits have been dug into it round the top, but apparently not deep enough to disturb a primary burial. The cairn is surrounded eccentrically (the cairn being not central, but to the west) by an oval earth and stone bank, 2.7 to 3 m thick, with a gap, 2.7 m wide in the centre of its east side. The space in-between the cairn and the bank averaging 6.5 m wide. It is not possible to conclude whether this is original or secondary. The fact that the bank is eccentric to the cairn, coupled with its stony nature, appears to rule out the interpretation as a bell-cairn. The bank is probably a modern addition similar to the feal-dyke at Cairnpapple and Andrew's Knowe, Roxburghshire. The cairn is surrounded by an extensive area of open caste shale-pits and the bank may have been erected to protect the cairn during the operations of the workings.
