Details Cropmarks of an oval enclosure overlain with rig and furrow (NO53NE0065) recorded by the RCAHMS in 1981 and in 1995. The enclosure measures about 25m x 20m. The rig does not respect the enclosure, and runs north-northwest to south-southeast. In March 2000 an excavation was undertaken by CFA in advance of improvements to the A92. The initial evaluation in 1998 suggested that the site may represent a small scale settlement characterised by a spread of negative features. However, the 2000 excavation failed to discover posthole or other structural features which would assist in the interpretation of the sites function. Excavation provided evidence of variously sized shallow pits (ash filled), and a section of shallow U shaped ditch/slot, which terminated within the trench. Two features contained unabraded prehistoric pottery which included Neolithic Grooved Ware.
