Designed landscape around Brechin Castle (NO55NE0040). It was first laid out by Alexander Edward for the fourth Earl of Panmure in 1701-8. Between 1764 and the 1st edition OS map of 1868, the policies were extended and informalised. This work was continued by the 11th Earl until his death in 1874. Further improvements to the walled garden were made between 1902 and 1928, at which time a woodland garden was also created. The present 16th Earl and Countess of Dalhousie have continued to work on the garden since 1950. At present, only the West avenue remains of the 18th century layout. As well as the Castle, the landscape incorporates many associated structures and features. Directly to the West of the Castle, and flanking the entrance to it, are a pair of gatepiers (NO 59725 59911). To the North-West of the castle are stables (NO55NE0092), built on the site of a church (NO56SE0026). To the West of the stables are the remains of a building known as The Channonry (NO 594 600). To the South-West of the castle, a bowling green is shown on the 1st edition OS map (NO 59482 59797), and beyond that there is a large walled garden and associated buildings, fountain and sundials (NO 59239 59631). A nursery (NO 59116 59748) and curling pond (NO 59244 59775) are added on the 2nd edition OS map. To the South of this is a pond (NO 59189 59232), shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as a curling pond. To the West of the gardens a sheepfold is shown on the 2nd edition OS map (NO 58777 59657). To the North of the gardens, and the West of the stables, is a lodge (NO 59181 60009). To the West of this is a mill complex, with a dam and sluice shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps (NO 58270 59885). The buildings remain, but the dam and sluice appear to now be gone, although their position is wooded. To the South of this is the farmstead and farmhouse, known as Haughmuir (NO 58368 59613), shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. To the South of this again is a large kennels and a lodge (NO 58553 59301), again shown on both 1st and 2nd edition maps. An icehouse and a pair of columns are also recorded as being within the grounds by HES, but this location is not exact enough to know the location (NO 597 599), and they are not shown on 1st or 2nd edition OS maps.
