Details Site of Castle. According to NSA (1845), the foundations of the Castle of Whitehills were ruinous in the 17th century and dug up in 1811. The antiquary Warden (1885) wrote that there were some vestiges still standing, known as White Walls, a short distance southwest of Kinnell church. In 1979 a rectangular cropmark at NO 5991 5007 was recorded by the RCAHMS during aerial reconnaissance. This was investigated in advance of a proposed housing development in 1990. The cropmark was discovered to have marked the site of Kinnell Castle and confirmed the account of destruction from the NSA. The castle was removed by gravel extraction and a sewer trench.
