Alleged site of Barnsdale or Rescobie Castle, a possible crannog. Antiquarian accounts discuss a castle on a possibly artificial island, connected to land by either a natural ridge or a causeway. Apart from 'a great quantity of stone' said to have existed here at the beginning of the 19th century, there appears to be no evidence for the existence of a castle. Traditionally Donald Bane (late 11th century) is said to have been imprisoned here. This possible crannog site was investigated during the Loch survey by CFA, March 1999. A spread of stones 40 m long east to west, by up to 20 m wide and 3 upright timbers were located, the latter driven into the lochbed 10 m to the north of the island. The results of the survey were inconclusive, but did not identify the island as artificial. The concentration of stone in the immediate area may indicate remains of structure.
