Details Mansion, still in use, set within a designed landscape (NO56SE0003). The first house on the site was built in circa 1490. The western wing of the house is probably from the 17th or 18th century, but incorporates earlier masonry, possibly from the original house. The main block of the mansion was built in 1820-26 by William Burn, architect, replacing an earlier section. A porch was added in circa 1860 replacing the original horseshoe staircase. There are antiquarian reports of an adjacent detached circular tower, however a visit by OS in 1958 found the owner at that time had no knowledge of the tower. The 19th century owner, Mr Carnegy Arbuthnot, reported evidence of a moat having previously surrounded the house. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as an irregular E-plan building, with an off-centre advanced bay, and shallower advanced sections to the east and west. There are east and west rear wings projecting to the north, and the central rear wing is T-plan, and joins the eastern wing forming an internal court. On the 2nd edition OS map, the section joining the central and eastern wing has been extended. Current maps show the eastern wing and sections joining it to the central rear wing have been removed. The central rear wing has also been widened and is rectangular. The main part is an irregular three-storey, classic, block. It has a seven-bay centre portion, with a two-bay advanced section to the west and an advanced bay to the east, which was added in 1825-6. The porch is Roman-Doric, and there are later Roman-Doric columns added at the first floor level and the stuccoed first floor windows are architraved. There is a datestone on the rear (north) elevation displaying the date 1584, which the antiquarian reports attribute to the circular tower, although its condition suggests the stone is more recent or has been remodelled. The earlier west wing is two-storey and three-bay, and is harled with margins. There is a Renaissance panel from circa 1630-40 at the second floor.
