Site of trial excavation by the Lunan Valley Project (site code HG82). In October 1982, an exploratory trench was laid out and excavated to a depth of approximately 1m (3'3 inches) on garden ground to the rear of 189-191 High Street. This site lies just within the precinct wall of the Abbey (NO64SW0018). The excavation provided limited information, recording extensive root disturbance by vegetation, and some evidence of arable farming, notably a spade-produced furrow which had led to the partial destruction of an undated burial, possibly a shallowly buried crouched inhumation. Preservation of bone increased with depth. A medieval bronze ewer was recovered from the area of root disturbance. It was buried on its side within a narrow pit deposited probably whilst the precinct wall was in use.
