Burgh of Arbroath, established as an abbot's burgh dating in the 12th century. It was laid out south of the abbey, near the shore, and gradually extended northwards towards the abbey. appears as a burgh of barony in a charter of 1488. It became a royal burgh in 1599. Only in the second half of the 18th century did the burgh expand beyond its medieval extent. By 1754 the town council had been granted the abbey precinct from the Crown and East and West Abbey Streets were subsequently laid out.
