Excavations were undertaken in 2000 by SUAT in advance of the new Arbroath Abbey Visitor Centre. Part of the original wall around the Abbey was uncovered, together with a fragment of a previously unknown gateway and traces of a metalled road into the Abbey precinct. Four human burials were recovered within the area enclosed by the wall and may represent the burial of medieval monks. Finds included a large number of carved stones, some with mason-marks, dumps of stone chippings, metal working debris, coins, window glass, pottery, buckles and animal bones. Subsequent watching briefs were carried out in March 2000 during underpinning of a burial enclosure wall adjacent to the site and between May 2000 and June 2001 on groundworks and landscaping associated with construction of the centre.
