Mansion house, still in residential use, built in 1827 by Archibald Simpson, architect, with alterations in 1913. It is shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as a rectangular building with wings projecting east and west, and a garden area to the north. It is a large symmetrical Graeco-Roman ashlar-faced mansion, with two storeys at the south-east, and two storeys with a later attic and basement at the north-west, with single-storey and basement wings. There are six-bay fluted Corinthian colonnades, set in pilasters between the two balustraded window ends. The centre three bays are advanced, with a pediment as a porte-cochere, after the manner of Carlton House, London. The wings have a tetrastyle anta order with pediment, and there is a rusticated terrace and basement. Stracathro Hospital was established in World War II to the grounds to the south of the house (NO66NW0119), and for a time the house was used as staff residence. The gates from this house were moved to the grounds at Careston Castle in 1957 (NO55NW0102).
