Details Two items of military dress: a pewter button from the uniform of the Montrose Loyal Volunteers, and a bronze military neck clasp of the type used on the military neck stock of the Napoleonic period, were found on Montrose Beach by the Old Lifeboat Station in 1994. The button is embossed with a crown, rose and initials 'MLV'. They were subsequently donated to the Montrose Museum. The Montrose Volunteers were founded in 1798, together with the Montrose Royal Volunteers, as threat of invasion by France increased. They were disbanded after the signing of the Peace of Amiens in 1802.
