In advance of development, in 1998, four trial trenches were dug through the playing surface of the former bowling green by SUAT. The site lies just outwith the historic core of the town, and close to the Montrose Basin. The trenches revealed that the natural sand bed of the Montrose Basin and groundwater lay at circa 1.5-1.7 m below ground level, and had been sealed by 19th-century levelling dumps and refuse. There were no structural remains of the flour mill and starch works which stood here in the 19th century, but a dark organic deposit may indicate the bed of a hot water pond associated with the flour mill.
