Details Site of Panmure Barracks, built in 1779, as a lunatic asylum, converted to a barracks in the mid 19th century when a new hospital was constructed at Sunnyside (NO76SW0063). The OS Town Plan (1862) shows the asylum in the western part of the site and the barracks to the east. It was first used as a barracks in the mid-19th Century for the Angus and Mearns Militia. In early 1914 many personnel of Montrose Aerodrome were housed here until accommodation was built on the aerodrome. It was demolished between the wars, and the area has subsequently been built over. A cannon was found on the site in 1992, built into a World War I gun emplacement (NO75NW0097).
