The former junction was the meeting point of the Caledonian Railway and the North British Railway for all services from the south and opened in 1848. The junction became notorious in the 'Race to the North' between the rival companies culminating in 1895. The train which reached the junction first got to Aberdeen first. The section still in use is of the former Caledonian railway to the north of the site of the junction. To the south of the junction the line is the former North British Railway. The Caledonian Railway section to the south, Dubton to Kinnaber Junction, was closed to passengers on 04/09/1967 and to freight on 04/05/1981. About 270m of the embankment to south of the junction of this section remains, the rest having been removed or redeveloped.
