Details Remains of a 17th to 19th century designed landscape around Craigievar Castle (NJ50NE0005). Geophysical survey in 2003 (as part of a Historic Landscape Survey on the existing and former lands of Craigevar Castle) identified a number of anomalies, some of which were interpreted as being related to the 18th century formal gardens shown on the 1776 (revised 1791) map of the estate. Trial excavations were undertaken in 2007 to assess some of these anomalies to the north of the castle. Most features could be shown to relate to garden features on a 1791 plan. Documentary evidence shows that the formal garden to the north of the castle was removed between circa 1819 and 1940 when the present parkland landscape was created. A watching brief by Cameron Archaeology in 2012 during work on a track relating to relocation of electricity supply for the steadings northwest of the castle, recorded no archaeological features or finds.
