Distillery established in 1898. Large whisky distillery complex with a long range (originally E-plan) including triple M-roofed former malt barn, pagoda kiln, mash room and still house. Long range of bonded warehouses opposite. Mainly 1 and 2-storey rubble buildings. During the World War II the distillery was closed and the building taken over by the Royal Army Service Corps, being known as Command Supply Depot Kennethmont, It was a central supply of food for military forces and Prisoner of War Camps over much of the north east. The field behind Ardmore Cottages was used for a parade Square and Nissen Huts (NJ52NE0077). Pre-fabricated buildings were put up between the main road and the warehouses for use as offices. Facilities included a bakery, butchery and NAAFI. Foodstuffs were stored in the bonded warehouses at Ardmore and other large buildings nearby. Malt barns were originally used as billets (these later relocated).
