Details Building still in use. 1997 analysis of clay and straw thatch. The building now used as a lambing shed but originally a dwelling. It remains undated at present but was found to consist of a number of courses of oat straw held in position by layers of clay up to 3cm thick. Courses of broom were noted from both the ridge and the eaves above the door. At the same time turves form the gable wall were also analysed and it was found that they did not derive from a single source. The first group is represented by dark grey peaty turves cut as regular parallelograms and made up the bulk of the wall. They were cut from an area of flood plain or higher river terrace with stable rough acid grassland plant communities. The second group of turves consisted of a thin organic litter over a sandy sub-soil. They have been cut from an area of glacial till. This group represents only a small proportion of the turves and may represent running repairs to the original structure. The vegetation on these turves represents a much wetter environment with evidence of marshy/damp ericaceous heath.
