House and shop, built in circa 1860 as one with Number 38 (NJ56NE0261), with later additions. It is a two-storey and dormerless attic, three-bay house with a shop in the ground floor. The building is constructed from coursed dark rubble, with contrasting tooled sandstone dressings and margins. The doorway to Number 40 is to the south, with the Number 42 doorway to the north having large flanking shop windows. The slate roof has a pottery ridge, later rooflights and a corniced and panelled end stack. There is a wing to the rear and a later single-storey harled garage projects at the north gable.
