Details Restored castle, built in circa 1577. There were mid-18th century additions by William Adam, which were demolished during the restoration in the mid-20th century. This castellated mansion is the Old House of Carnousie built by the Ogilvies. The original part of the house was a perfectly preserved example of a castle on a Z-plan, one of the towers being round, the other square. The square tower reputedly bore the date 1577 but this can no longer be seen. The exterior of the castle is more ornate than is usual and is certainly one of the best examples of its kind in Scotland. An oblong building was added to the west gable. The eastward part of the old massive garden wall still exists. The castle was used as a farm store, but has now been fully restored to its original 16th century form.
