Details Site of 'Pennant's Mound', an artificial mound located in the middle of town and which was part of the territory of the Carmelite Monastery. It is chiefly thought to be a work of art and is supposed to be the labour of penance enjoined by the fraternity. A trial excavation trench in 1989 revealed little though possible archaeological levels may exist beneath the mound. A few sherds of late medieval pottery were found and it was concluded that this was probably a garden feature of 18th century date. It was removed on the 11th October 1989 when a watching brief was kept. This revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
