Details Cropmark, possibly of a Roman military camp. A square enclosure with rounded corners and covering approximately 1.3 ha identified as a cropmark on aerial photographs taken July 1989. Subsequent investigation on the ground suggested the presence a ploughed out bank on the southwest and southeast sides. Ground penetrating radar survey carried out in September 1989 confirmed the presence of an enclosure ditch at the northeast and southeast corners. A programme of trial trenching in September 1990 located features in only 7 of the 14 trenches, these generally only shallow ditch sections. No direct dating evidence was recovered although one sherd of abraded Roman pottery was recovered from the ploughsoil in the interior. presence of a ditch confirmed by ground-probing radar. Interpretation remains problematic. Alternative interpretations as both Roman camp and homestead moat have been suggested.
