Details Remains of a stone avenue. According to Maitland, and other authorities, a double line of stones, about 20 yards apart, extended from a point 450 yards south of the stone circle (NJ71NE0003), up to the circle itself and from there to another circle (NJ71NE0004), an overall length of about 500 yards. Each side of the avenue would have contained about 40 stones but only four remain (see NJ71NE0095, NJ71NE0096, NJ71NE0097, NJ71NE0098). An urn containing ashes was found but exactly where is not clear. In 2001, R. Bradley undertook geophysical survey and opened up two trial trenches. An area to the south of the henge measuring 120m x 60m was surveyed using magnetometry. A series of anomalies were recorded which included possible stone holes. Two trenches were opened to establish the nature of the sockets for the avenue monoliths. Two sockets were examined and they proved to be shallow, with steeply cut sides and flat bottomed.
