The steamship WILLIAM HOPE, with a crew of 6 under Captain G. Golde, travelling from Fraserburgh to Burghead, in ballast, was stranded at Aberdour Bay, Aberdeenshire, on the 28th October 1884. The crew were saved, largely by the actions of Jane Whyte, who waded into the sea to catch a rope from the crew to create safety rope along which the 15 crew belayed to safety. .
