Workshop, part of old Peterhead Prison (NK14SW0162). It was probably built in 1886 with some minor later additions and was former an Admiralty Yard smith's shop and fitting shop, converted to prison workshop in circa 1959. Industrial circular stalk and single storey, multi-bay, rectangular-plan workshop. The stalk is built of bull-faced granite, the workshop of squared and snecked granite with some Aberdeen bond and granite ashlar dressings (the granite from Stirlinghill Quarry). The roof is of corrugated iron. The stalk, located to centre north of the workshop, has a flat-coped square-plan base which gives way to a battered circular stalk with a band course close to the top surmounted by cornice, broad projecting band course and blocking course at apex. The workshop is a long low range. The northern, entrance, elevation has a large relieving arch to the centre bay with a low coped link adjoining the stalk. It has regularly-disposed windows punctuated by two later flat-roofed porches in bays to left, 2-leaf door immediately to right, single window, further door and four windows beyond. Altered bays incorporating later lean-to extension in bays to outer right. The south elevation has eight semi-circular windows in bays to left, nine full-size windows and some blocked openings across centre bays. A later lean-to extension is located to the right with three further semi-circular windows and blocked door to outer right. The prison was built in 1888, and appears on the 2nd Edition OS map. It supplied the labour force to work in Stirlinghil Quarry and in the Admiralty Yard attached to the prison, including supporting the work of a civilian labour force in constructing the Harbour of Refuge breakwater. A photographic survey was carried out in 2011 prior to proposed demolition and suitable stones were identified for re-use within the redevelopment.
