The Battle of Cairnwell is recorded by the Royal Commission at near NO 1399 7800 but may have in fact extended to nearer the Devils Elbow to the south. The battle was initially more a cattle stealing raid in the 17th century, and was thought to be one of the last raids recorded in Glenshee. The raiders, said to number about 500, had rounded up a very large herd of stolen cattle and were making their way through the Pass of Cairnwell when they were counter-attacked by about 120 local people who were trying to save their cattle. Other glens and clansmen arrived and a bitter battle was said to follow with some 400 people losing their lives.
