Details Meterological observatory, still in use, founded in 1856. This observatory, the first purpose built meteorological station in the area, was founded with the impetus of Prince Albert, who donated a set of 'fine instruments' by Negretti and Zambra, London, to take meteorological readings. The construction of the building itself was financed by Mr Farquharson of Invercauld. It is a timber framed and boarded building with a granite base course, glazed upper panels and a multi-pane timber door to the south. The fishscale roof has bull-nosed grey slates and lead flashings. A large octagonal louvred cupola is surmounted by a weather vane.
